“The indigo” is a late 60s to early 70s inspired bar designed to go into the foyer space of the St. James theatre. This space is intended to be used by the general Auckland public, but I have designed it in a way for the doors to always be shut and to create a huge amount of contrast so it is a very unexpected design. The contrast of the modern Auckland CBD mixed with the 1920s architecture of the original theatre creates a very strong contrast to my proposed design of a very bright, textural and playful space. This bar can be used by people going to and using the theatre, but it’s intended purpose is a stand alone bar which is situated inside the theatre building.
I have designed this space to flow in the same wave pattern as my wallpaper, which was inspired by my artist model Verner Panton. I have done this by having high seating near the Queen Street end of the building, then flowing to a regular height table and chairs then finally as you get to the centre of the building I have created a sunken lounge seating which creates the lowest point of the wave.
The mixture of textures and fabrics that I have used have been selected with my wallpaper in mind, the colour palette started from this. The purple shag pile carpet and electric blue tiles work together while the red velvet and pink lighting works against that and adds contrasting colours. I decided to use a very dark carpet on the floor to ground the space as well as dark granite table tops that tone down the space while adding a slight reflective quality that is lacking in the carpets and upholstery.
